Q

What is boiling ?

A

A rapid change of state from liquid to gas, with vigorous bubbling

Eg. Water in a pot boils when it reaches a temperature of 100°C.

Q

What is change of state?

A

A transition between forms of matter when energy is added or removed

When energy is added, particles speed up and move further apart. This can cause the state of matter to change.

Q

What does compressible mean?

A

Able to be squeezed into a smaller space

Gases can be compressed easily because the particles are separated by a lot of empty space.

Q

What does condensation mean?

A

A change of state from gas to liquid

When a gas condenses, the particles lose energy, slow down and move closer together.

Q

what does deposition mean?

A

A change of state from gas to solid

In winter, water vapour in the air can turn directly into solid ice crystals on car windows as the particles lose energy.

Q

What does evaporation mean?

A

A change of state from liquid to gas at the surface of a liquid

When a liquid evaporates, particles at the surface gain energy, speed up and spread apart to fill the surrounding space.

Q

What is a fluid ?

A

Able to flow and change shape

Liquids and gases are fluid because the particles move around each other.

Q

What is freezing?

A

A change of state from liquid to solid

When a liquid freezes, or solidifies, the particles lose energy, slow down and become held in fixed positions.
