states of matter Flashcards
what are the properties of a solid?
•particles are arranged in a regular pattern
•they have strong bonds holding the particles together
•particles vibrate in a fixed position
•all particles touch
what are the properties of a liquid?
•particles are always in contact with eachother but can move past eachother
•particles form an irregular arrangement
•they have weaker bonds between particles and the particles have more energy than that of a solid
what are the properties of a gas?
•the particles in a gas are not arranged in any pattern and move around freely
•the particles have more energy than that of a liquid or solid
why do solids have a high density?
because the particles in as solid a packed closely together so they have a lot of mass for their volume
why do liquid usually have a high density?
because their particles are close together so they have a lot of mass for their volume
why do gases have a low density?
because the particles are far apart so they have don’t have a lot of mass for their volume
