density Flashcards
how can you calculate density?
density =mass/volume
what is density?
density is the mass per unit volume of a substance
how can you find the density of a liquid?
•place a measuring cylinder on a balance and zero the balance
•pour some of the liquid into the measuring cylinder
•read the mass of liquid from the balance
•calculate the density using the equation density=mass/volume
how can you find the density of a regular shaped solid?
•measure the mass of the object using a balance and make sure to 0 the balance before using it
•measure the dimensions of the object using a ruler and calculate the volume
•calculate the density using the equation density=mass/volume
how can you find the density of an irregular shaped object?
•measure the mass of the object using a balance and zero the balance before using it
•find the volume using a displacement method: fill up a eureka can so the water is just below the spout, place an empty measuring cylinder under the spout and put the object in the eureka can collecting the water that comes out of the spout. The volume collected is the volume of the object
•calculate the density using the equation density=mass/volume
