States Of Matter Flashcards
What are the three pillars ok kinetic theory?
1)All matter is composed of small particles (ions, atoms, molecules)
2) They are in constant random motion
3) These molecules constantly collide with each other and their surroundings
What do forces of attraction do?
They hold particles together
What are the two opposing forces that determine the state of a matter?
Kinetic energy pulls particles apart
Forces of attraction hold particles together.
What is another name for states of matter?
Phases of matter
The phases or states of matter can exist in what four states/phases?
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Plasma
What is temperature?
It’s a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles of a substances.
What is the specific form of KE concerning Kinetic Theory of Matter of Temperature?
Thermal energy
What is thermal energy?
the energy contained within a system that causes particles motion that is responsible for its temperature
What happens to temperature during phase change?
It remains constan
What causes matter to change phases?
-thermal energy. Temperature is the effect we measure not what drives the change
What is evaporation?
the change from a liquid to a gas at the surface of a liquid
What is condensation?
the phase change of a substance from a gas or vapor to a liquid.
What is boiling?
the action of bringing a liquid to the temperature at which it bubbles and turns to vapor. Liquid to gas.
What is melting?
the process of becoming liquid or to be liquefied by heat. Solid to liquid.
What is sublimation?
is the process by which a solid changes phase and turns directly into a gas without passing through the liquid phase.
