States of Matter Flashcards
What does the particulate theory of matter state?
That matter is made up of tiny particles.
What are the three states of matter?
Solids
Liquids
Gases
Describe the following of the three states of matter
Shape
solids liquids gases
fixed/regular
shape takes the shape takes the
of part the container shape of
it is in the entire
container it is in
Volume
solids- volume is fixed
liquids- volume is fixed
gases- variable- it expands to fill the container it is in
Density
solids-usually high
liquids- usually lower than those in solids
gases- low
Compressibility
solids-cannot be compressed
liquids- may be compressed very slightly by applying high pressure
gases-very easy to compress
Arrangement of particles
solids-packed closely together, in a regular way
liquids-have small spaces between the particles and are randomly arranged
gases-have large spaces between the particles which are randomly arranged
Forces of attraction between the particles
solids-strong
liquids-weaker than those particles in a solid
gases- very weak
Kinetic energy
solids-possesses very small amounts of kinetic energy
liquids-has more kinetic energy than the particles in a solid
gases-possesses large amounts of kinetic energy
