Changes of State Flashcards
matter can exist in any of the 3 states of matter depending on its…….
temperature
it can change from one state to another by………
heating or cooling as this causes a change in kinetic energy and arrangement of particles
What happens when a solid is heated?
-the particles gain kinetic energy, move increasingly faster and further apart causing the attraction between them to become weaker turning it to a liquid
What happens when a gas is cooled?
-the particles lose kinetic energy, move slower and slower and closer together causing the forces of attraction between them to strengthen changing it to a liquid
Name some examples of compounds that sublime
Solid carbon dioxide (dried ice)
Moth balls
Iodine
Ammonium chloride
What is boiling?
boiling occurs at a specific temperature, it takes place throughout the liquid
What is evaporation?
evaporation can take place at a range of temperatures lower than the boiling point, it takes place only on the surface of the liquid
