States of Consciousness/Sleep Flashcards
cooperative experience where person responds to suggestions; with changes to perception, memory, and behavior (think: Sonya)
hypnosis
the act of focusing on a single target (such as the breath or a repeated sound) to increase awareness of the moment (think: yoga)
meditation
type of psychotherapy focusing on cognitive processes and problem behaviors
cognitive-behavioral therapy
sleep stage 5: rapid eye movement, dreams happen, sleep paralysis “going offline” (brain waves during this sleep appear very similar to brain waves during wakefulness)
rapid eye movement (REM)
sleep is subdivided into four stages by brain wave patterns: 1. alpha-> theta->light sleep(5-10min), 2. theta->delta(20 min), 3. 20% delta 4. 50% and up delta (#3 & #4 are deep sleep)
non-REM (NREM)
awareness of mental activities: internal (heart rate rising) mental (thoughts/memories) environmental (our surroundings)
consciousness
internal rhythms of biological activity (think: menstrual cycle for woman)
biological rhythms
programming in body, when to be awake & when to be asleep (sleep-wake cycle)
circadian rhythm
beta waves, fast active waves in brain (daytime)
awake
alpha waves, slower, more relaxed waves in brain (night)
drowsy
