Shaping/Maintaining Behaviors Flashcards
what’s used to create new behaviors: take behavior, break into steps, positive reinforce: completion of each step.
shaping
a place animals learn
skinner box
stimulus that when present indicates positive reinforcement occurs (light turns on + food is given, learning when food will come out)
discriminative
partial strengthening of behavior
partial reinforcement
how many times something occurs
ratio
how much time has passed
interval
set number of behavior must occur for positive reinforcement to be administered (press lever 20x, get a piece of food)
fixed ratio (FR)
average number of behavior responses to receive positive reinforcement (varies every time)
variable ratio (VR)
certain amount of time must elapse before receiving positive reinforcement
fixed interval (FI)
can change over time
variable interval (VI)
way of learning where the motivation for a behavior happens after the behavior is demonstrated
operant conditioning
mental representation of environment (running maze over & over, problem solving)
cognitive maps
positive reinforcement NOT NEEDED to learn, it’s an incentive to demonstrate learning
latent learning
animal training, token economy, autism
behavior modification
shuttle box: passive behavior occurs after being exposed to inescapable/uncomfortable stimuli (dogs being shocked, depression)
learned helplessness
