Stage 2
Characterized by periodically appearing sleep spindles
- can wake up without too much difficulty
Stage 1
- Slowed breathing
- 5 min or so
Stage 3 & 4
3- transitional stage
4- slow wave sleep (hard to wake up)
REM sleep
After stage 4 you go back to 3&2 and enter REM sleep
-dreaming

Divided consciousness
Hypnotized subjects sometimes behave as suggested when no one is there
- processing information without conscious awareness
- like driving and daydreaming
Posthypnotic suggestion
Can not recall what one experienced during hypnosis
-people may not remember material, but material is still there
Dependency
Continued consistent use produces tolerance
- requires user to take larger and larger doses before experiencing drugs effect
Withdrawal
Discomfort and distress that follow discounting use of addictive drug
