Statements On The Planets Flashcards
Mercury
Mercury is the smallest of the eight planets in our solar system and also the closest to the sun. It has no atmosphere and its surface is covered with craters.
Venus
Venus is slightly smaller than Earth. It is covered in clouds of sulphuric acid and has an atmosphere made up of carbon dioxide. Despite being the second planet from the sun it is the still the hottest, this is because its carbon dioxide clouds trap heat like a greenhouse.
Mars
Mars is the furthest of the four terrestrial planets from the sun. It is also called the Red Planet because its surface is made of iron oxide which is reddish in colour. It has a dusty, rocky surface, calm conditions and a thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide.
Jupiter
Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. It has no solid surface and is mainly made of hydrogen and helium. It has a giant storm system about three times the size of Earth called The Great Red Spot.
Saturn
Saturn is the second largest planet after Jupiter and the sixth planet from the sun. It has an impressive system of rings which are made up of billions of tiny particles of ice.
Earth
Earth is the fifth largest planet in our solar system. It is the only planet with liquid water, oxygen and living things. It is the right distance from the Sun and has the right chemicals to support life.
Uranus
Uranus is the third largest planet in our solar system. It has an atmosphere of hydrogen and helium. It looks blue-green and has very faint rings.
Neptune
Neptune is the furthest planet from the sun and the smallest of the four gas giants. It is blue in colour due to a thick atmosphere of cold methane gas. It has strong winds and violent weather.
