Space Travel Flashcards
Space Shuttle
A spacecraft that can be used more than once and that carries people into outer space and back to Earth.
The International Space Station (ISS)
A spacecraft facility that orbits the Earth with astronauts on board.
Radio Telescope
Uses radio waves to produce visual images of distant objects.
Wave
Transfers energy from one point to another. It does this through vibrations.
Crest
The top of the wave.
Trough
The bottom of the wave.
Wavelength
The distance from the crest of one wave to the distance of another, measured in (m).
Frequency
The number of waves passing any point in one second. This is measured in hertz (Hz).
An Amplitude
The geatest displacement of a wave from its undisplaced position. This is measured in metres (m).
Flyby Missions
When a craft is sent past a planet or other body, taking pictures on its way to another destination.
Orbiter Missions
When an orbiter circles around a planet or moon to take detailed measurements of the body.
Robotic Lander
Missions that land in a location that has been mapped out by an orbiter.
Light Telescope
Uses visible light to produce magnified images of distant objects.
Refractor Telesope
Uses lenses to refract light. Covex lenses converge light to a point. Comcave lenses diverge light away from a point.
Reflector Telescopes
Use plane and curved mirrors placed at different angles to reflect light. The type of curved mirrow used is a concave mirror.
