• believed socialism was possible in Russia in 1917
• thought revolution would spread accros europe so other countries would send aid to Russia and they would advance econmoically wihtout capitalism
• in the meantime Russia would have to build economy to feed people and defend revolution
• intially argued the oct revolution had created a society between capitalism and socialis. Lenin called this ‘state capitalism
