Starvation Flashcards

1
Q

Basis

A

When there’s not enough food, body starts breaking down other things for energy
First breaks down spare molecules such as excess fats, spare proteins etc
Then shifts to more essential molecules such as muscle proteins and protective fat

Q

Tissue Metabolism

A

RBCs - only glucose
Brains - prefers glucose but ketones when necessary
Liver - always enough energy for itself and works to feed others

Q

Fed state

A
Liver will make and transport fat and make glycogen
adipose collects fat
Skl muscle makes glycogen
Heart uses beta ox fat

Q

Kwashrorkor

A

Normal caloric intake but not enough proteins therefore not essential AAs (his, Ile, Leu, Lys, Met, Phe, Thr, Try, Val)
No protein leads to hypoalbuminemia and edema
Liver becomes fatty and enlarged
Secondary infections occur due to complement def
