Obesity Flashcards
Facts
Share same genes as ancestors so fat is due to lifestyle
Fatter = more health risks
Increased LDL and less HDL
Reavens Syndrome (metabolic syndrome)
Coconcurrance of 3 of 5 following: abdominal obesity (BMI), high bp, high fasting glucose, high serum TAGs, low HDL.
Assoc with obesity and could have other problems which leads to more health risks
Obesity mech
When adipocytes get out of control
Mediated by insulin, insulin says make more fat so your body makes more fat and you get fat
Not regulated by CNS but by food intake
There is a limit to how big an adipocyte can get so once that limit is passed, pre-adipocytes are promoted and soak up more fat. Adipocytes do not go away so easier to get fat once you lose weight
Ghrelin
from stomach, orixogenic (increase appetite)
Prader willi is excess so you eat more
Insulin
follows peak of ghrelin and is anorexigenic (inhibits appetite). produced by pancreas
Leptin
indicates you are full
Anorexigenic, produced by white adipose cells, similar to insulin
Def = never feel full so can lead to obesity
PYY
minor leptin
Adiponectin
inhibit lypogenesis and gluconeogenesis
activates beta-ox and glycolysis
Anorexigenic
works via AMP kinase path: blocks biosynth and storage
