Starters Flashcards
Connecting batteries in parallel does what?
Increases amperage
Connecting batteries in series does what?
Increases voltage
Minimum life cycle of starters are what
4 years 7000 start cycles
What is the ratio between ring gear and pinion in a gas engine
Between 10-15:1
What is the ratio between ring gear and pinion in a diesel engine?
18:1-25:1
Most common in diesels is 20:1
What are the 3 types of electric starters?
Reduction drive-uses extra gear between armature and drive mechanism
Direct drive-engages flywheel through pinion
Planetary gear reduction drive- uses planetary gearset to multiply torque. Reduces weight by 50%
What causes low voltage burnout?
Low battery voltage
Occurs when excess amperage flows through the starter causing the motor to burnout prematurely. When battery voltage is low the starter uses more amperage to rotate
What type of motor is an air start motor?
Vane type
What test is used to determine if a starting system has corrosion or faulty switch contact points without disassembly?
Voltage drop test
What is an overrunning clutch
Stops starter from spinning when engine starts
Greatest amount of torque in a starter is when?
0 rpm
