Drivelines Flashcards
What is cardin joint
Original name for universal joint
Non uniform velocity
Driven shaft turns at a constantly changing speed
Driveshafts must perform what 3 basic functions
Strong enough to owithstand torque
Allow shaft to change length
Transmit torque while allowing angle of drive to change
Heavier the shaft is the lower the what
Max speed
Critical speed
The speed at which centrifugal force causes the shaft to move off its axis. If shaft operates at or above this speed it’ll destroy it
Rigid joint driveshafts
Rigidly mounted driveshafts
Drivesahft capacity is what
Max torque the shaft can handle
Tubes
Made from steel
Can be manufactured diffrent ways
Flat steel tubes
Bent insane of tube and seam welded
Extrusion
Pierced with die and then tube is created
Drawn over mandrel tube
Welded tube drawn over a tube mold consistent wall thickness and smoothness
Tube yokes
Pressed onto tube and welded in place
End yokes
Splined over put put shafts of trans.
3 types of end yoke designs are
Wing type-allows bearing caps to be bolt3d directly to yokes
Full round- allows bearing caps to be retained by snap rings
Half round- uses straps or wings hated caps and ubolts
Flange yokes
Two flanges mounted together
Coupling shaft (jack shaft)
Short driveshaft used in multiples shaft driveline. When sused yiu nest also use a hanger bearing on non drive end of shaft
Universal joint
Four trunnions equally spaced at 90°
Non uniform velocity
A shaft driven through an angle will accelerate and decelerate twice per revolution
Cancelation
The act of canceling the non uniform velocity in a driveshaft
Brinelling
Torque indents bearing surface of trunnion with shape of needle rollers
False brinelling
Too small of am angle or no angle at all squeezing out lube between needles and trunnions leading to wear
Harmonic vibration
A vibration that occurs at 50% of critical speed
