Stars Science Term 2 2024 Flashcards
What is a Nebula?
When interstellar matter of gases and dust gathers, producing a giant cloud called a nebula
What is a protostar?
Within a nebula, a certain region may begin increasing its density and temperature enough to
form a protostar
What is a Main Sequence star?
Stars then spend most of their life as a main sequence star and continue to produce
energy through nuclear fusion reactions
What is a Red supergiant?
Eventually, the star will run out of hydrogen, it begins to cool and the outer layers
expand outwards
What is a Supernova?
When the super giant runs out of fuel, it collapses and gives off massive amounts of energy.
This is called a supernova
What is a Planetary nebula?
Eventually, the red giant runs out of fuel and the outer layers escape to become a
planetary nebula
What is a White dwarf?
The remains of a planetary nebula
What is a Meteoroid?
a small rocky body revolving in the Solar system
What is a
a meteoroid that enters the Earth’s atmosphere and burns up before hitting the surface (also
called a shooting star)
What is a Meteorite?
a meteoroid that hits the Earth’s surface
What is a Asteroid?
a small rocky body (larger than a meteoroid but smaller than a planet) orbiting the Sun
