Science Valadation Test Yr 10 Term 1 Flashcards
What is mitosis?
a type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus
What is meiosis?
Meiosis is a type of cell division in sexually reproducing organisms that reduces the number of chromosomes in gametes (the sex cells, or egg and sperm).
What are the 4 stages of mitosis
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase and Cytokinesis
What is Prohase?
Chromesomes become visible beacsue they condense. The necleolus disappears and the neclear membrane breaks down. Spidle fibres start to form
What is Metaphase?
Chromesomes arrange themsleves along the equator of the spindle. The chromatids are attached to the spindle fibres at centromere region.
Number of cells formed in meiosis
4
Number of cells formed in mitosis
2
Type of cell formed from mitosis
Genetically identical
Type of cell formed for meiosis
Genetically unique
What is the reason of mitosis
Repair, growth or maintenance in normal body cells
What is the reason of meiosis?
Producing gamets-sperm of egg cells
Number of Chromoesomes in each cell at the end of division?
Mitosis: 2n = 46
Meiosis: n = 23
What is Anaphase?
Chromatids pulled apart to opposite poles of the cell with the centromere leading
What is Telophase?
The cell starts to constrict across the middle
What is CytoKinesis
Constriction continues until two daughter cells form. The two cell are identical to the original parent cell
