starch Flashcards
what is starch made of
polymer of alpha glucose molecules linked by glycosidic bonds
what shape does starch make
coils into spring shape because of shape of monomer and angle of glycosidic bonds that join c1 to c4 of next monomer
what are the two molecules of starch
-amylose
-amylopectin
amylose
-long unbranched chain of alpha glucose
-angles of glycosidic bonds give coiled structure (like cylinder)
-makes compact so good for storage
amylopectin
-long branched chain of alpha glucose
-side branches means enzyme that break glycosidic bond down has better access
-mean glucose can be released fast
what does starch mainly store
major carbohydrate store in plants
how is starch usually stored
intracellular starch grains in organelles called plastids
when is starch broken down
-respiration for energy
-source of carbon used to make other molecules
is starch soluble
insoluble in water
why is it important that starch is insoluble
water can’t enter the cells by osmosis which would make them swell
