Stanza 4 Flashcards
Loves hate
Another oxymoron is used to convey that both these emotions are linked as her hate stems for the love she first felt for him
Hate and love are polar opposites and are the two most powerful emotions a human can feel
White Vail; a red balloon bursting
White symbolises an innocent marriage which then contrasts with red balloon as it has connotations of anger, violence and blood.
The red balloon symbolised havishams heart as it burst when she was betrayed by the man she loved most
The balloon bursting usually gives a loud noise that shocks you, this same shock can be felt by havisham when she was harshly hurt and humiliated that night.
Throughout this poem havisham takes happy thing like balloons and twists them into sinister things (like the balloon bursting)
this shows that havisham is so consumed by her hate that she can no longer enjoy thing in life and everything is a bleak reminder of that night
Bang I stabbed at the wedding cake
She is damaging the cake just like her mental health has been forever damaged
It is a coping mechanism to show they her love and happiness is truly over
Cutting the wedding cake is usually the first thing couples do together so she stabbed it to show much much she wants him hurt
She is walking around with a knife like psychotic woman as she had became unhinged due to her detestable emotions
Male course for a long slow honeymoon
Yes again illustrating the hatred she feels turns her violent as she wants him dead as he is now dead to her
She take traditional wedding things and makes then go stail and stagnant very much like herself being left to weither away
B-b-b-breaks
‘b’ emphasises the suddenness and shock she has faced.
The future she planned with him is slowly disintegrating in front of her much like her words it has broken.
She is a woman who is not only physically broken but mentally broken too
E comment
Stanza 4 is when the plan reaches its climax as it shows
the true nature of hatred and how it can take a young woman and twist it into an old hag who sits withering away regretting her life is is so hurt and isolated she can never move on
This makes the reader frustrated as they can imagine the life she could have had but was robbed from her
