Stanza 3 Flashcards
Who did this to me Puce curses Fluent tongue in its
Who did this to me?
Throughout the poem havisham is filled with extreme distress however this stanza takes a more remorseful tone
we start to sympathize with havisham as she asked herself the regretful question
We start to see havisham as more fragile
Puce curses
Puce is the red hot anger that she feels as her face is physically turning red the frustration she feels when shouting out her hatred for the man.
This yet again shows that the hatred she feels is very much a physical feeling too
Fluent tongue in its ear
The remorseful tone is strengthen when she reminisces about the nights she would spend with her lover
However when she ‘bites awake’ the focus of hatred is centred again as bite has connotations of pain, blood an attack then again conveying havisham mind is so twisted that she has changed her happy memories into bitter ones.
‘Its’ havisham dehumanises him as she refers to him as an object
This illustrates that she’s is so hurt by him that someone who she once loved is now no longer human but rather a monster to her
E comment
This stanza is very powerful as it lets us see to the full extent that havishams mind goes to as it is so polluted and blinded by her emotions she can’t look back on nice memories anymore but rather turns the violent with the destation she is filled with
