Standing on shoulders part 1 Flashcards
Scientific method
Understand that science process of discovery and theories change over time.
Ideas can be built upon once discoveries can be made they can sometimes disprove theories that were though to be true or make our understanding of theories more comprehensive
Understand that Science uses evidence gathered in investigations to support claims
Without hypothesis being tested then nothing can be said to have occurred. With experiments and following the scientific method we can use the evidence gathered in investigation to support claims
Identify the steps in the scientific method.
- Ask a question
- Do some background research to determine the best way to do your experiment, or to make sure it has not been done before
- Construct a hypothesis for your experiment
- Test your hypothesis with an experiment
- Analyse the data from the experiment to see if it supports your hypothesis, and draw a conclusion. If the hypothesis is not supported, you can go back to step 3 and construct a new experiment to test your idea
- Communicate your results by drawing a scientific report
Fact
Something that is true, an observation of the world around us
Hypothesis
A proposed explanation for a phenomena made at the starting point for further investigations
Theory
A well- substantiated explanation acquired through the scientific method and repeatedly tested and confirmed through observation and experimentation
Law
A statement based on repeated experimental observations that describes some phenomenon of nature
`
Aim
The aim of the experiment, what you wish to test/find out:
Materials
a list of materials needed to carry out an experiment
Method
A list of steps
Results
A table recording results
Conclusion
What did the results tell us? what can we conclude from this?
