Standardized NR Speech Assessment Flashcards
1
Q
standardized/NR assessments in SSD
A
should never be used as the sole eligibility criteria for our clients
2
Q
various data points should be considered in standardized/NR assessments in SSD
A
- intelligibility
- stimulability
- social-emotional-education impact
- oral mech
- dynamic motor assessment
- phonetic inventory
- perception/discrimination skills
- case history/parent interview
3
Q
advantages of standardized/NR assessments in SSD
A
- provides context
- provide standard scores
- contain most of the consonants/clusters in a language in the initial, medial, and final position of words
4
Q
how to elicit single words
A
- ask, “what’s this?”
- provide a cue (e.g., It has wings and flies. It’s a…)
- provide a binary choice with target word first (“Is it a bird or a house?”)
- provide delayed imitation
5
Q
provide a binary choice with target word first
A
distractor shouldn’t be similar to the target word in meaning or in phonetic structure
6
Q
provide delayed imitation
A
- “It’s a bird. What is it?”
- add a phrase after the production of the target word so the child is not repeating the last word heard
- if possible, after the word is elicited via delayed imitation, try to elicit it again spontaneously by asking
- “What’s this again?”
7
Q
raw score
A
- typically the number of how many sounds the child incorrectly
- needs to be converted into other metrics for interpretation
8
Q
standard score
A
- measure of child’s performance compared to norm-referenced peers
- 100 indicates average performance “the mean”
- convert raw score using manual
9
Q
standard deviation
A
- a measure of variance: distance from the mean
- standard deviation = 15, therefore 85-115 = WNL
10
Q
confidence interval
A
range of scores that you can be 90%-95% confident contains the child’s “true” score
11
Q
percentile rank
A
- can be used to compare where the test-taker fell compared to age and/or sex-matched peers
- on most speech and language tests, the 50th percentile indicates average performance
- 90th percentile: Jill scored the same or better than 90% of other kids who completed this same ax.
12
Q
age equivalent
A
- based on the average of performance for a given age group
- don’t account for the range of normal (best to avoid these)
