Standardisation Flashcards
What is standardisation?
The method for allowing for differences in characteristics such as age, sex etc in the population.
Why is standardisation important?
This is important as rates of disease are strongly dependent on factors so this removes bias such as differences in population or observer variation
What is direct standardisation?
Rates from each population studies applied to standard population giving the adjusted mortality rate
What is indirect standardisation?
Rates from a standard population applied to each population giving the standardised mortality rates
Why is is good to study a larger population?
Selecting a large population sample means the results are more generalisable to a wider population
Consequence of poorly recorded measures
This gives a reduced association between exposure and outcome.
If only some measures are recorded poorly, this may introduce systematic errors and bias.
