Hypothesis and P value Flashcards
1
Q
What is the null hypothesis?
A
There is no statistical difference in risk of events between groups in the population form which samples came from.
2
Q
How do you test for the null hypothesis?
A
Chi squared test (x2)
This tells us if our hypothesis is true or not.
3
Q
What does it mean if p<0.05?
A
The null hypothesis is false (result is statistically significant) and highly unlikely to be due to chance.
At p<0.05 it means for an experiment the likelihood of you getting the result if the null hypothesis was true (by chance) is less than 5%. This is so small that the null hypothesis can be rejected.
4
Q
Range and role of p values
A
P values range from 0 to 1 and test the strength of the null hypothesis
