Standard Forms Flashcards
What is a standard forms?
Standard form (also called scientific notation) is a way of writing very large or very small numbers
Ax10^n
“A” can be called the front number. This number can be bigger than or equal to 1 but less than 10. “A” can be a decimal or whole number
Ax10^n
“n” represents the power. This can be positive or negative whole number
Examples..
- 5x10^2 (correct)
- 005x10^23 (The front number is less than 1)
8x10^7 (correct)
92.0x10^-12 (The front number is greater than 10)
7x10^3.2 (The power is not a whole number)
Standard Forms con’t
If the power of the standard form is positive, it tells how many times we need to multiply the front number by 10.
3.5x10^4
This means that 3.5 will be multiplied by 10 4 times
This means that 3.5x10^4=3500
Standard forms con’t 2
If the power of the standard form is negative, it tells how many times we need to divide the front number by 10
4.0x10^-3
This means that 4.0 with be divided by 10 3 times
4.0x10^-3=0.004
