Q

When does the Gear Position Warning sound?

A

When the gear handle is not down with the throttle below mid-range, airspeed below 120kts, and with flap at UP or T/O.

When gear is not indicating down and locked with the flaps in the LDG positon.

When there is weight on wheels when the gear handle is not down.

Q

Describe the height limits you would consider as part of the “H” of the HASLLG checks for stalling.

A

Minimum Abandonment Height (MAH) of 3000ft AGL.

Base height (i.e. no-go-below height):

  • 4000ft AGL if dual, or
  • 5000ft if solo, or
  • 2000ft above cloud tops.

You should also remain at least 1000ft clear below cloud.

Select an appropriate datum height. A clean stall usually requires at least 1000ft above base height. A configured stall usually requires at least 2000ft above base height.

Q

Describe the set-up and execution of an academic clean stall.

A

Complete the HASLLG checks (in the climb if applicable).
Level off at 140kts.
Fly a lookout turn through at least 180 degrees, using 45 degrees angle of bank.
Roll out, check the downgoing wing.
Select Idle power and maintain level.
Trim down to 100kts.
Maintain level, but do not trim below 100kts.
At the stick shaker, carry out the SSR.
Complete after T/O checks once recovered and climbing.

Q

Describe the Standard Stall Recovery (SSR).

A

Control column centrally forward to remove the buffet and stick shaker.
Simultaneously apply Max Power - apply right rudder to keep straight.
Once the buffet and stick shaker have ceased, roll wings level.
Ease out of dive.
Re-trim.
After T/O checks.

Q

Describe the set-up and execution of an academic stall in the final approach configuration.

A

Calculate appropriate datum height, and level there at 140kts.
Complete the rest of the HASLLG checks and approach checks, taking T/O flap to stabilise at 120kts (using 35% TQ) at the end of the simulated downwind leg.
Lookout in turn direction, check TCAS.
Reduce power to 15% TQ.
Tip in to a simulated final turn, but with 5 degrees nose down, and 30 degrees AoB (do not take LDG flap).
Half way around turn set 10% TQ.
Roll out on the simulated extended centreline - set 2 degrees nose down attitude.
At the stick shaker, carry out the SSR.
Once recovered and climbing, select Gear Up.
Once above 110kts, select Flap to Up.

Q

In the academic stall in the simulated final approach, at roughly what speed will the stick shaker activate?

A

Approximately 85kts.

This corresponds to about 15 units of alpha

Select LDG flap.
Halfway around the turn, increase AoB to 45 degrees, and simultaneously apply a squeeze of back pressure.
At the stick shaker, carry out the SSR.
Once recovered and climbing, select Gear Up.
Once above 110kts, select Flap to Up.

Q

Describe the set-up and execution of an academic power on stall from the cruise.

A

Calculate appropriate datum height, and level there at 180kts.
Complete the rest of the HASLLG checks.
Complete a 90 degree lookout turn.
Reverse the turn, setting 30% TQ, 30 degrees NU and 30 degrees AoB.
Hold this picture until the stick shaker operates.
At the stick shaker, ease off the back pressure to remove the symptoms.
Recover to straight and level flight.

Q

Describe the set-up and execution of an academic stall in the simulated run in and break.

A

Complete the HASLLG checks.
Accelerate to 200kts.
At the simulated break point, select Idle and 60 degrees AoB.
Maintain level.
Below 160kts, increase AoB and back pressure to maintain level.
At the stick shaker, unload the back pressure, reduce AoB and apply power.
Continue the turn downwind free of symptoms.
