Q

What information should be passed on the initial call to a new frequency when flying IFR?
What are the exceptions to this?

A
  1. Callsign
  2. Cleared level. (e.g. “maintaining FL 90” or “descending FL40”)

The exceptions are when:

a) You are maintaining a level different to the one you are cleared to. (Rare)
b) You have been specifically told to maintain a given speed. (e.g. “Liverpool Approach, VYT **, maintaining FL80, Maintaining 250kts.”)

Q

If freecalling an agency , once initial contact has been made with a new frequency when VFR, ATC will likely ask you to “pass your message”. They may also give you a new Squawk. What information should you pass?

Give an example of what you would say if freecalling Swanwick climbing out of LL in S Wales.

A
  1. Aircraft Callsign and Type (inc. no. in formation if applicable).
  2. Departure and Destination points.
  3. Present Position
  4. Level/ height/ altitude.
  5. Other important information.

e.g. “3741 [Squawk], Anglesey **, Single Texan climbing out of Low Level, (local flight from Valley), 10 miles West of Shobdon, passing altitude 2000ft.”

You could then tell them what you are looking for: e.g. request operate in the block ** to **ft, or re-entry to LL in vicinity of **.

Q

What does “Own Navigation” allow you to do? What does it not allow you to do?

A

It allows you to move freely in the lateral plane. It does not allow you to move freely in the vertical plane, unless you have been cleared to manoeuvre in a given block.
