What is stakeholder analysis?
- process of systematically gathering and analysing qualitative information
- to determine whose interests should be taken into account when developing and/ or implementing a policy, program or a project.
What are the advantages of stakeholders participating in sustainable assessment?
- -> Effectiveness
- -> Sustainability
- -> Empowerment
What are the disadvantages of stakeholders participating in sustainable assessment?
- -> Additional resources are needed
- -> Conflicts may arise
- -> Competency is required
Why stakeholder analysis?
- important when doing a new product on the market
- get the stakeholders approval
- find out who is positive or negative for my projects
- include early in projects to avoid as many conflicts from the beginning on
How can stakeholders be identified?
- Compile / review existing information related to the planned activity
- Information by staff of key agencies, from written records and population data
- Stakeholder self-selection by announcements at meetings or media
- Information from other stakeholder
What are some of the key questions to ask?
- Who are the potential beneficiaries?
- Who has existing rights?
- Who is responsible for the intended plans?
- Who has the money, skills, or key information?
What is stakeholder characterisation?
characteristics to cluster stakeholders
e.g., interest, influence,…
What should you do with supporters?
Maintain or increase power through building coalitions, and providing information and resources
What should you do with opponents?
Convert opposition into support through negotiations, information and/or coalition building
Can SH positions change?
Yes, it’s an ongoing process

Interest - Influence - Action
low - low - monitor at minimum effort
high - low - keep informed
low - high - keep satisfied
high - high - manage closely (KEY PLAYERS)
