Staircase
Stairs themselves: the steps, railings and landings
Aka stairs, stairway
Stairwell
a vertical spatial opening, usually a double or multiple volume containing an indoor stairway
Treads
are the upper surfaces of steps
Risers
Make up the vertical portion between the tread of a step and the tread of the step immediately above it
Nosing
the edge of a step projecting beyond the riser.
Landing
a platform between two consecutive flights of a stairway
Going
the distance measured on plan between the nosing of a tread and the nosing of the thread or landing immediately above it
Flight
A flight as a part of a stairway which consists of consecutive steps between landings in other words an uninterrupted series of steps
Pitch line
this is a notional line which connect the nosings of all the threads in a flight of stairs
Winder
these are steps that are narrower on the one side than the other change direction of the stairs without landings where the regulations will allow it
Balustrades and handrails
The balustrade is a system Of railings and balusters that prevent people from falling over the edge of a staircase
Balusters are vertical posts that holds up the handrail
Handrails can I have various profiles but should be free of abrasive elements and have a comfortable cross section in relation to the ergonomics of a hand

Max tolerance
Height and going of steps should remain the same along the stairs maximum tolerance 6 millimetres

The going and with of a thread shall not be less than 250 mm, provided that where the stairway does not have solid Risers each thread shall overlap the next lower thread by no less than 25 mm

Rise max
Rise of a step shall not exceed 200 mm.
If the building is however deemed to be accordance with sans 10400 – s the Rise may not exceed 170mm and must be solid.

Headroom
The Headroom at any point on a stairway shall not be less than 2.1 m measured vertically from the pitch line
