What happens in stage 1?

A

Stage between wakefulness and sleep

Easily woken, hear noise

Eyes shut but flicker, drifting off

What happens in stage 2?

A

Begins after about 10 minutes

Less responsive, sleeping soundly, if woken, won’t realise you’ve been asleep

Sleep spindles occur in the brain to keep you from waking

What happens in stage 3?

A

Happens after 25 minutes

EEG shows delta waves increase

Very unresponsive, hard to wake

What happens in stage 4?

A

Sleep walking and bed wetting

Sleep gets gradually deeper, delta waves dominate EEG recordings

Only loud noise or shaking could wake you

A

90 minutes in, EEG pattern becomes mixed

Rapid eye movement, dreaming occurs

Rest of body doesn’t move, its paralysed
