Circadian Rhythms Flashcards
What is a circadian rhythm?
An internal body clock - it controls periods of activity and inactivity
How does sunlight affect circadian rhythms?
Sunlight cues;
sunlight decreases at the end of the day
the visual system sends signals around the brain to increase the production of melatonin
Which people are more likely to experience problems with their sleep/wake cycle?
Blind people or night shift workers
If there is no sunlight what happens?
The rhythm shifts into a 25 hour cycle
What happens when the pattern is disrupted?
Poor/difficult sleep
What was the aim of Michel Siffre’s experiment?
To live without clocks in the dark to discover how the brain perceives time
He descended into a cave and found humans have 24-25 hour clock
