Stages of Mitosis Flashcards
What are chromatids?
The two strands in a chromosome
What is a centromere?
The middle part in a chromosome
What are centriroles?
Bundles of protein
What are the four stages of mitosis?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase
What happens in Prophase?
The chromosomes condense and become visible. The nuclear envelope begins to break down and the centrioles move to the poles of the cell. The centrioles produce spindle fibers wich start to extend to the chromosomes.
What happens in Metaphase?
The nuclear membrane has disappeared and spindle fibers have attached to the centromere. The chromosomes are pulled to the middle of the cell where they line up.
What happens in Anaphase?
The spindle fibers contract and the centromere of each chromosome splits in half so that 1 chromatid from each chromosome can be pulled to opposite poles of the cell. The stage is recognized by the V shape of the chromatids.
What happens in Telophase?
The nuclear envelopes begin to reform around each group of chromosomes and the spindle fibers being to disappear. The chromosomes begin to uncoil and become less distinct. The cytoplasm begins to divide to form 2 new gentically identical daughter cells.
