Cancer Flashcards
What is a Mutation?
Changes to the base sequences of DNA
What is a Malignant tumour?
It grows quickly and invades other tissues. Spread throughout the body causing tumours in other organs
What is a Benign tumour?
It grows slowly and do not invade other tissues
What do cancer treatments do?
They control the rate of cell division in cancer cells by targeting the cell cycle to try and stop it
What is Chemotherapy?
Prevents the synthesis of enzymes required for DNA replication. They stop the cell cycle before S phase,
What can Chemotheraphy and Radiotheraphy damage?
DNA and it can force the cell to kill itself which is known as Apoptosis
What can drugs do?
Prevent spindle fibers from forming will prevent mitosis stage as 1 cell will contain double the DNA and 1 cell will contain no DNA. This prevents the cells from functioning or dividing
