Cognitive stage
The preparation stage - you are new to a skill and you have to think about what you have to do to perform the skill. You will make a lot of mistakes.
Associative stage
The practice stage, you repeat and practice skills so they improve. Mistakes will decrease as your skills improve.
Autonomous stage
The automatic stage, you perform the skill naturally and without conscious thought. You show control and accuracy. Mistakes are rare.
Feedback
The information a performer receives about their performance
Intrinsic feedback
Feedback from within the performer - how did the movement feel
Extrinsic feedback
Feedback from an external source such as a coach, teacher or your team mates.
Knowledge of results
Knowing your score, time, distance or place allows you to measure how well you have done.
Knowledge of performance
Analysing the quality of your movement or technique.
Guidance
Help and instruction given to help learners develop skills
Visual
Images that can help performers understand the skill
Verbal
Words used to describe the skill or movement.
Manual
‘hands-on’ guidance showing you how to perform a movement.
Mechanical
The use of physical supports/equipment such as flotation devices in the swimming pool
