Stages Of Learning (Book 4) Flashcards
What phase of learning is cognitive?
Initial/first phase
In the cognitive phase of learning what type of feedback should be used?
Extrinsic feedback is required in the form of visual / verbal cues (demonstrations). As the performer is unable to use intrinsic / kinaesthetic feedback.
Why are demonstrations and verbal explanations important for a learner in the cognitive phase of learning?
As this helps the performer to form an accurate mental picture of a skill. It is important for the coach to highlight specific teaching points when providing demonstrations.
What should teaching be like for cognitive learners?
Teaching should be concise and simplified.
What are movements like by a cognitive learner?
Movements lack fluency and are jerky
What is learning like for a cognitive performer?
Trial and error learning is used.
Learning is gradual and it is usually quite slow
What types of feedback should be used with a cognitive learner?
Extrinsic feedback
Positive feedback to reinforce successes
Specific feedback to allow performers to correct errors
What is the 2nd phase of learning?
Associative
In the associative phase of learning what type of feedback should be used?
Learners now begin to use intrinsic / kinaesthetic feedback and they are able to detect some of their errors, so they are less reliant on extrinsic feedback . Performers are now more aware of increasingly subtle and complex cues
What are movements like in the associative phase of learing?
Performers have increased rhythm and movements are more efficient and fluent
