Classification Of Skills (Book 2) Flashcards
What are continua used for in movement skill analysis?
To classify movement skills based on a gradual increase/decrease in a number of characteristics
Continua represent an imaginary scale between two extremes, acknowledging that skills often embody elements of multiple characteristics.
Why do we use continua to classify movement skills?
As skills have elements of all characteristics to a greater or lesser extent
And they can change depending on the situation which they are performed in
This variability makes strict categorization challenging.
What does the Environmental Influence Continuum focus on?
The effects of the environment on skills
(It categorizes skills based on how much they are influenced by external factors)
What is an open skill?
Movements affected by the environment/teammates/ opponents/surface, requiring many decisions.
What are practical examples of open skills.
Intercepting a ball in netball
Tackling a ball in football
Tackling in rugby
What are closed skills?
Skills not affected by the environment, habitual, follow a set pattern.
What are examples of closed skills.
Chest pass in netball
Penalty shot in netball
Throw in darts
Is a closed skill externally paced or self paced?
Mainly self paced
Is an open skill selfed paced or externally paced?
Mainly externally paced
What is the muscular involvement continuum
This is concerned with the precision of movement, and the amount of muscles used.
What are gross skills?
These are skills where a large number of muscle movements are involved and there is little to none precision needed
What are 5 practical examples of gross skills?
Shot put
Discus throw
Goal keeper dive in football
100m sprint in athletes
Swimming
What is a fine skill?
This is a skill which involves intricate movement and uses a small amount of muscle groups. These skills tend to be precise in nature.

What are 2 practical examples of fine skills?
A throw in darts
A bowl in cricket
What is the pacing continuum?
What does the pacing continuum focus on?
This focuses on the timings and movements of a skill
What is a self paced skill?
This is a skill where the performer is in control and they determine when the movement starts and also the rate at which is proceeds
