5
Q
What does the first stage do?
A
- Draws a comparison between children, their parents and individuals and the Spooks.
- Children depend on their parents and see them as authoritative figures that they should not disobey.
- But they still try to disobey them because of ‘self-discovery of the mind’.
- Like us with the Spooks, children try to outwit their parents.
- External constraints
6
Q
What does the second stage do?
A
- Uses the same analogy but says that now, these children face different barriers to development.
- Things like conscience and morals restrict them.
- Like us, they have to battle these constraints in order to be truly free from them.
- Internal constraints
7
Q
What is the third stage?
A
- Where we have finally broken free from the constraints of all the Spooks, aka the ‘parents’, and are able to pursue true self-interest.
- Overcoming external and internal constraints
