A

Q

What does the first stage do?

A
  • Draws a comparison between children, their parents and individuals and the Spooks.
  • Children depend on their parents and see them as authoritative figures that they should not disobey.
  • But they still try to disobey them because of ‘self-discovery of the mind’.
  • Like us with the Spooks, children try to outwit their parents.
  • External constraints

Q

What does the second stage do?

A
  • Uses the same analogy but says that now, these children face different barriers to development.
  • Things like conscience and morals restrict them.
  • Like us, they have to battle these constraints in order to be truly free from them.
  • Internal constraints

Q

What is the third stage?

A
  • Where we have finally broken free from the constraints of all the Spooks, aka the ‘parents’, and are able to pursue true self-interest.
