Spooks and Morality Flashcards
What had made John (charity shop analogy) feel like he HAS to donate to charity?
The Spooks
What is a Spook?
Anything that restricts an individual’s ability to pursue what is in their self-interest.
Name 4 Spooks.
- Morality
- Religion
- Laws
- Tradition
What have the Spooks done to individuals?
Induced them into a pre-destined state of morality where we simply obey what they approve of and deny what they disapprove of.
Where does traditional morality see its origins?
In the Spooks, argues we should reject this.
Why are they called the Spooks?
Assuming the supernatural exists, the Spooks can be compared to ghosts - always there, everywhere and cannot be seen.
How does Stirner re-define morality?
Says that what is good and right is what benefits you.
What did Stirner say to justify his new definition?
“Nothing is more to me than myself”
What did Stirner say we should do to abandon the Spooks and their control over us?
Only pursue actions that lead to the fulfilment of self-interest.
