Psychological vs Ethical Flashcards
Define psychological egoism.
The belief that an individual is ONLY capable of pursuing self-interest.
Define ethical egoism.
The belief that an individual OUGHT to act in their self-interest because they do not already, despite thinking so.
What analogy can be used to explain how Stirner viewed psychological egoism?
The charity analogy - John gives money to charity. He thinks he is doing this because he is a good person, but Max Stirner says he in fact does this because he has been made to feel guilty and unentitled by the Spooks if he does not do so.
What did Stirner do to psychological egoism?
Rejected it, said that it was simply wrong that individuals are already and only motivated purely based on their self-interests.
Did Stirner create the charity shop example?
Not sure, therefore say he ‘reacts’ to it.
