Asocial/ pre attachment
birth to 3 moths
At the end of this period infants begin to show a preference to social stimuli
Reciprocity and interactional synchrony play a role in establishing the infants relationships with others
Indiscriminate attachment (3 to 6 months)
Infants begin to discriminate between familiar and unfamiliar people, still comforted by anyone, do not display stranger anxiety
Discriminate attachment
7 months onwards, infants begin to develop specific attachments to one person, their primary caregiver, shown through seperation anxiety and joy on reunion. Stranger anxiety as they avoid unfamiliar people
Multiple attachment
10 months old
After main attachment is formed, infant develops a wider circle of multiple attachments (secondary attachments) seperation anxiety is also displayed in these relationships
