Bowlbys Monotropic Theory Of Attatchment Flashcards
Attachment is adaptive
Evolutionary explanation of attachment as he believed that attachment is an innate and adaptive process for both infant and parent
Social releases
How the baby becomes attached is through particular features that trigger caregiving behaviours from their caregivers: smiling and crying. Help form a reciprocal bond between caregiver and infant. Infants become most strongly attached to the person who responds most sensitively to the infants social releases
Critical period
The first two and a half years of life is classed as the critical period. If an attachment isn’t formed before this time the child will find it harder to form one later
Monotropy
Human infants have an innate tendency to become attached to one particular person, this is more important than other attachments
Internal working model
Child’s first relationship with their primary caregiver forms a mental representation of this relationship. This will act as a template for future relationships
