Animal Studies Flashcards
Procedure of Lorenz’s study
- lab experiment
- control group: half the eggs left with mother goose in natural environment
- experimental group: half of eggs placed in an incubator. When hatched first moving object they saw was Lorenz
Lorenz placed the two groups together to distinguish them and placed them together. Lorenz followed the geese into adulthood to see if deprivation had permanent affect
Findings of Lorenz’s study
- gosling formed an attachment with Lorenz straight away as if he was their mother
- control group followed their biological mother
- after putting the gosling together they returned to their mothers, half and half
Other findings of Lorenz
Imprinting is irreversible and long lasting
Critical period was discovered, if imprinting does not occur within this time Lorenz found that chicks did not attach themselves to another figure
Procedure of Harlow’s study
- lab experiment
- he split monkey into two groups
Condition one- cloth mother provided milk, wire one didn’t (4 monkeys)
Condition two- wire monkey provided milk, cloth one didn’t (4 monkeys)
Monkeys were studied for 165 days
Observations were also made of monkeys responses when frightened to a mechanical teddy
Harlow followed the monkeys into adulthood to see if early maternal deprivation had long term affects
Findings of Harlows study
Monkeys spent most time with cloth monkey
Monkeys who fed from the wire monkey returned to cloth monkey after feeding
When frightened monkeys climbed to cloth monkey
Motherless monkeys developed abnormally into adulthood showing long term affects, they were more aggressive and less sociable than other monkeys and bred less often
A mother figure had to be introduced to infant monkey within 90 days for an attachment to form. If not it was impossible and damage would be done
Comfort comes before being fed
