blocking
the staging of actors to facilitate the performance
calling script
a copy of the script separate from the prompt book. has all cues placed within it and is used to call the show. the prompt book is used to create the calling script
crew assignments
assigned roles necessary for the success of a performance (lighting board op, run crew, fly person, etc)
cue
a trigger for an action to be carried out at a specific time, necessary for a lighting change or effect, sound effect, movement of scenery, etc.
house management
team responsible for the smooth operation of the house (lobby and audience seating) during the run of the show
production meeting
a venue where all areas can share information, clarify the needs of the department, establish deadlines, and work on creating a schedule with consideration for each departments’ priorities
prompt book
a copy of the script the stage manager uses during rehearsals to develop and document the details of the production (internal cues, prop movement, actor entrances/exits, set prop placement, etc.)
rehearsal report
a form created by a stage manager to record notes which arise during a rehearsal and affect other production departments
run sheet
a list of procedures or events organized in a temporal sequence as it relates to the production
SM team roles ( during auditions)
prepare two spaces
-one is a waiting room for the actors
-the other is the space for them to audition
-Help the director during the process
-varies by director needs
SM team roles (Technical Rehearsals)
-Move into the theater and begin to put the show together -safety walk with actors
-know where the first aid kit is stored
-transition to tech table
-Organize the crew in order to facilitate the production -practice in their roles
-organize shift sheets
-communication is essential
SM roles (During Performance)
-Work with house management
-start of show, intermission, emergency preparedness
-Call the show
-SM is now in charge
-calling all cues and running the production
-Maintain the integrity of the show
-the director is now gone, you may end up giving notes to actors, notes about changes in light focus/lamp replacement, sound inconsistencies, paint touch-ups, etc.
-performance reports
types of tech rehearsals
- paper tech- meeting between the designer and stage manager, used to put cues into the prompt book. This may be done for scenery, lights and sound.
- dry tech- Moving set pieces in work light with the crew and the actors. Stop and start working the changes.
- wet tech- Same as dry tech, but changes occur in theatrical light. Stop and start are still in place.
- tech runs- The show is running with all technical elements in
place.

used for costumes to allow performers to practice their costume changes for timing purposes
