not hurried usually people talked and there was sometimes entertainment

make their own choices, marry, own any personal possessions, to be protected by courts of law and had to obey their master

they weren’t human and were to be brought and sold

necessary and normal part of life
what kind of people were slaves usually ?
prisoners of war coming from many different countries in africa europe and some of the middle east , children of slaves were automatically slaves

harder they worked as a labourers on farms, as shepards cowherds and worked in mines and built roads and bridges

they were cooks, gardeners, general servants labours in factories musicians, actors and entertainers

yes move around the streets freely and go shopping and visit theatres
how could you tell the difference between slave and freeman?
there was little difference e.g. clothes
how did masters differ?
some were mean and hit their slaves and some were nice more wise masters didn’t hit their slaves as they worked better
did all slaves die slaves?
no some were freed if they worked well and a sometimes a sign of friendship
how were most slaves released?
in the masters will it said to release them

act of freeing a slave
how was a manumission performed?
the oldest method was were a legal ceremony was performed and the public official would touch the slaves head with a rod and was declared free or the master invites a slave to dinner and to recline on a couch and declares him free infant of friends at home

a freedman
what rights did a freedman have?
the opportunity to make his own way in life become an important member of the community but he couldn’t vote in public elections, or become a high-ranking officer in the army
what did he still have to do for his master?
he had to work for him a fixed number of days a year and become one of his clients and pay his respects. he was expected to to help and support his master
what happened to the freedman name?
he would take part of his masters name to make his name
what would freedmen do when they had become freedmen?
they might do the same work as before, set up buiness by former masters, become messengers, priests, council secretaries or become very rich and powerful
