Rationale behind stability and trunk control exercise
Helps strengthen muscles required for transition from bedridden to standing and walking
What are the physiological effect of this treatment?
Contraction of the specific muscles increase intra-abdominal pressure & thus stability
What structures are affected?
1’ core stabilisers-
Multifidus
Trans abs
Pelvic floor
Diaphragm
How would you treat someone who has difficulty with stability and trunk control?
1) Introduce
2) Explain procedure & benefits for informed consent
3) Assess ability of patient (able to sit or not)
4) Unable to sit: breathing control, getting into tight jeans, draw tummy in, pelvic tilt (make bridge w back), try to stop passing water, single leg lifts & slides and bent knee fallout
5) able to sit: perform above exercises in sitting, can be done on a gym ball (push in different directions to progress), perturbation (resist being pushed) & reaching
6) complete exercises until fatigue/loss of form
What are some precautions to be aware of when carrying out this treatment?
Dizziness when sitting/ standing for first time
What should you ensure whilst carrying out this treatment for safely reasons?
Another therapist is present to stabilise patient if required
