Dynamic stretching Flashcards
Whats the rationale behind dynamic stretching?
Improves dynamic
flexibility
As part of warm-up
Physiological effects of dynamic stretching
A regular force over a long time period:
Increases the ability to tolerate discomfort
Increase tissue’s ability to tolerate load
Stretching using regular low-level force results in stronger:
Fibre orientation
Increased thickness
Improved cross-bridging
What structures are affected by dynamic stretching?
Soft tissue - muscle, ligaments & tendons
Joints
Parameters of dynamic stretching
8 - 12 reps
As required
How would you teach a patient a stretch?
1) explain what muscle is being stretched, point out where they should be feeling the stretch
2) demonstrate the stretch & get them to replicate
3) observe their stretch & give technique pointers
Contraindications & precautions
Bony limit to movement
Recent fracture
Acute inflammation/tissue trauma
Acute pain with movement
Non-compliant patient or unable to give consent
Shortened tissues are compensatory
How would you document this treatment?
Date, Time, Patient name
Explanation of procedure & gaining informed consent
Muscle being stretched
Stretch prescribed
Patient response to stretch
Recommended duration and frequency
