Whats the physiological effects of active stretching?

A

A regular force over a long time period:
Increases the ability to tolerate discomfort
Increase tissue’s ability to tolerate load

Stretching using regular low-level force results in Stronger:
Fibre orientation
Increased thickness
Improved cross-bridging

A

Precautions/ contraindications

A

Bony limit to movement
Recent fracture
Acute inflammation/tissue trauma
Acute pain with movement
Non-compliant patient or unable to give consent
Shortened tissues are compensatory

A

1) explain what muscle is being stretched, point out where they should be feeling the stretch
2) demonstrate the stretch & get them to replicate
3) observe their stretch & give technique pointers
