- marlow, believes hardcastle to be a landlord & finds his familiarity rude, the humour ensures in how marlow treats hardcastle, comedy of manners as it showed people only polite in some situations, illustrates the hypocrisy of manners

- mrs hardcastle discovers Tony has hidden jewels, mistakenly thinks she has been robbed
