SST Flashcards
How many layers does Earth have?
The Crust
The Mantle
The Core
Define the crust
This is the first layer on which we live. It is made of rock and it is 7 to 70 km thick.
Define Mantle
This is the second layer of the Earth, made up of solid rock in molten form. It is
around 2900km thick. The upper mantle is rigid and the lower mantle is soft and flowing
slowly.
Define Core
It is the earth’s third and largest layer, made up of iron and nickel. The outer core is
liquid and the inner core is solid.
What’s a continental crust
The continental crust forms the land, mainly made up of granite, and up to 70km thick.
What’s oceanic crust?
The oceanic crust is under the ocean, mainly made up of basalt rock. It is about 7km thick but heavier than continental crust.
What is Granite
Granite is an igneous rock, found in continental crust
It is extrusive, forming at the surface by volcanic eruption.
It is found in different shades and colours.
What Basalt
Ocean floor is made up of basal, it is an igneous rock.
It is intrusive, forming beneath the surface.
It is more thicker and harder than granite.
It is typically dark in colour
What is the highest mountain under the ocean?
Mauna Kea
What is Oceanic trenches?
Ocean trenches are steep, narrow depressions in the deepest parts of the ocean, where old ocean crust from one tectonic plate is pushed beneath another plate, raising mountains, causing earthquakes, and forming volcanoes on the seafloor.
What is ‘‘the ring of fire’’?
Volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean
Can Earthquakes happen on Earth and Ocean?
Yep
What are Plates are pulled along by the sinking edges called?
slab pull
Crust and Mantle together form the…?
lithosphere
iron and Nickel are present in…?
the core
What is Lithosphere?
The lithosphere, a hard rock layer formed by the crust and upper mantle, is home to Earth’s living things, forests, agriculture, and it is rich in minerals.
Why do the Earth’s plates move?
Scientists believe gravity, temperature, and pressure under the earth cause plate movements, with convection current being the driving force.
What is it called when plates are pushed along by the spreading ridge of the lithosphere
ridge push
What is the region where two plates meet called?
boundary or margin
What is Earthquake?
An Earthquake is caused by sudden shifting of the rocks under the crust due to plate movements.
What is a volcano?
A volcano forms when liquid rock or magma bursts out through the Earth’s hard surface due to plate movements
